After Charlie was lost at sea, I had renewed direction and solidified determination: I would get hired by an airline. I would do it for Charlie. I had many supporters—mentors, family members, and close friends—urging me to continue flying. A few pilots told me, “Don’t give up flying, Mary. Accidents are a part of the profession.” Little did they know that I had no intention of giving up flying then; instead, the loss of Charlie was like rocket fuel. Furthermore, my parents had been good to me, and I resolved that this was the way I could give back to them and to the world: I would persevere until an airline hired me.

With God by my side, I was fearless. I would fly anything, anywhere. I would succeed, or I would die trying. So I continued flying cargo and passengers to points South. I increased my ratings and attended college at the same time. After I graduated from college in December 1975, I got hold of a publication that listed all airlines; I sent out 50 copies of my resumes.

And I waited.
